This is sure to be an incendiary topic. So, without any further qualification, here’s what I rank as the top 5 hip hop songs of all time.
I’m not trying to be old school and hardcore here. This is an awesome and groundbreaking song. Even after 30 something years, when you drop this in a club people lose their minds.
A hip- hop- a hippy – a hippy- to the hip- hip- hop- and don’t stop the rocking to the bang- bang- boogie, say up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogety beaaattt…
2. Protect Ya Neck by The Wutang Clan
Gritty, raw, rough and completely genre defining. Not their best work as a crew but more influential than anything else that they have ever done. A classic from the golden era.
To my mind, no song epitomises the golden era (1988 to 1997) of hip hop better than this track. Chubb Rock is perhaps one of the most underrated emcees of all time and Jeru is always dope.
4. N.Y State of Mind by Nas
Production by Premier, raps by Nas – both of them were in at the peak of their talent when the dropped this one. Why is it awesome? Well, the beat is flawless and Nas’ flow and precision is second to none. Brilliant track.
5. Spitfire by Dose One ft. Lioness
This is stupidly left-field and really sums up everything about Anticon and Solesides. There was a time when people were actually pretty successful pushing the boundaries of hip hop but, unfortunately, that time has since passed. Nevertheless, Anticon were a force to be reckoned with in the late 90’s/early 00’s – to my mind, Dose One characterised their style best of all.
Yeah… so argue over that!
